A DUMMIES GUIDE TO RUGBY

With South Africa and the world being in such a hype over the rugby due to the Rugby World Cup that started 9th of September 2011 in New Zealand I just knew I had to write something about that before it ends.

It's so sad about Carter not being able to partake anymore, he was one of the players that made the ladies watch the match, not only to see the way he kicks that ball but to just drool over him, I mean have u seen his arse?????

So on Saturday one of my friends made his facebook status: " Suid-AFrikaanse vroumense wat vir die All Blacks skree weet niks van rugby af nie" Translation: South African women who supports the All Blacks knows nothing about rugby.

Me being a major All Black (specially Dan Carter and since recently Israel Dagg---) fan was instantly offended by this statement.

But after doing some impromptu investigations I was schocked to find that there is a lot of truth in his statement. There are girls out here (people I actually know-shame on you,you know who you are) who does not know the difference between a scrum and a ruck.

So sad, but ladies don't fear when Kimi's near, I'm gonna give you a quick rundown on the basics of rugby.

The basic rules of rugby:

This I hope everyone knows- a match is 80 minutes divided into 2 halves each being 40 minutes.

It was shocking to hear that lots of girls don’t even know how much players there is in a team… well its 15 players on the field with 7 back-ups just waiting in the wings to take over. Meaning there’s 30 hunks to drool over during the game with the chance of seeing another 14.

The ball can be moved by carrying, kicking or passing it to your team mate, but the sucker punch is you can’t pass it forward; it has to be kicked or carried. But in the case where it is passed forward it’s called a knock and a scrum will be awarded and the other team will get control of the ball.

A scrum is used for a few other situations, but you don’t need to break your pretty heads over them.
If one team makes a wrong move<foul>, like a high tackle or being offside- a penalty is awarded to the opposing team. With a penalty the team has one of three options: 1. they can kick the ball out of bounds and get a line-out… 2. Take a free kick… or 3. Take a penalty kick. Whatever he team decide to do the offence has to be 10 meters from the site of the foul.
And obviously the aim of the game is to get as much points as possible. Points are awarded for 1. A try -5 points.. 2. A conversion -2 points… 3. Drop goal- 3 points and 4.a penalty goal will get you 3 points.
Obviously the team with the highest points WIN!!!!!
Rugby terms:

Try – This is when a team grounds the ball over the goal line (the try zone).

Conversion – If the team scores a try they get the chance to convert it by kicking the ball between the goalposts. The conversion kick must be taken in line with where the try went down. A further 2 points are awarded for this if they score.

Drop Goal – This is when a player drop kicks the ball between the goalposts during the run of play. 3 points are awarded for this

Penalty – If there is a violation, or foul, by the opposing team, a penalty will be awarded. As mentioned above, the team have three options on how they want to play the penalty.

Scrum – This is a type of play where the two sets of forwards from opposing teams mass together by binding their shoulders. They then try to hook the ball back to their team’s side once it has been placed in the scrum.

Ruck – This is where one or more of the players from each team, who are on their feet, try to maintain or gain possession by closing in around the ball and driving their opponent away from it.

Lineout – This is the way the ball is restarted after it has been played out of bounds. The lineout is awarded to the team who didn’t put the ball out of bounds. The teams form two lines of players and the ball is thrown down the middle. Players then jump up or are lifted up by their teammates to try and gain possession of the ball.

So ladies now you don't have to just sit there and wonder what the hell is going on..
